Learn more about ULEZ
More information to help you navigate ULEZ regulations and how they may affect you.
What is ULEZ and does it affect you?
ULEZ runs 24 hours a day, every day except Christmas Day, across all 32 London boroughs. If your vehicle does not meet the emissions standard, you will pay £12.50 each day you drive in the zone. Miss a payment and the penalty rises to £180.

Does ULEZ now cover where you live or drive?
Since August 2023, ULEZ covers all 32 London boroughs, not just central London. If you live or drive anywhere within Greater London, ULEZ applies to your vehicle.
Good news: 9 in 10 vehicles in outer London already meet the standard. But it is worth checking yours before you travel.

Not in London? Check your local emissions zone
Clean Air Zones, Low Emission Zones and Zero Emission Zones operate across UK cities. Check if your vehicle is compliant before you travel.

Real questions drivers ask about ULEZ
At a minimum, ULEZ-compliant vehicles meet the following standards:
Motorcycles, mopeds, motorised tricycles and quadricycles (L category) should meet Euro 3 standards. Petrol cars, vans, minibuses and other specialist vehicles should meet Euro 4 standards for NOx emissions. Diesel cars, vans, minibuses and other specialist vehicles should meet Euro 6 standards for both NOx and PM emissions.
Any vehicle that meets ULEZ emissions standards can drive freely within the zone. For petrol vehicles, this generally means they were registered after January 2006. For diesel cars, it typically means they were registered after September 2015.
Lorries, vans, and specialised heavy vehicles (with a Gross Vehicle Weight over 3.5 tonnes). The same applies to buses, minibuses, and coaches (with a GVW over 5 tonnes) are exempt from the ULEZ charge. However, they will be subject to the LEZ charge if they fail to meet the emissions standards set by the LEZ.
It is possible to retrofit your car to make it compliant with ULEZ standards by upgrading the exhaust system or adding emissions-reducing technology. This will require taking your car to a garage and having the work done by a qualified mechanic.
However, this is probably not the most cost-effective solution. Depending on your vehicle and fuel type, retrofitting could end up costing more than simply replacing the vehicle by financing a new one.
The easiest way to find out if your vehicle is ULEZ-compliant or not is to use our free ULEZ compliance checker at the top of this page. It takes about 5 seconds to enter your info and see if your vehicle is compliant.
If you're unsure about the information provided, check with your vehicle's manufacturer, contact TfL directly for more specific advice or visit a local garage.
The only way to completely avoid ULEZ while continuing to use London's roads is to drive a compliant vehicle. This means either fixing your vehicle to meet the emissions standards or purchasing a new one.
If you drive a car older than 2006 into London 5 days per week, you'll end up paying more than £250 per month in ULEZ charges. So purchasing a newer, ULEZ-compliant car is well worth the investment if you drive into London for work.
Alternatively, you can take public transport or ride a bike! You’ll get to your destination without sitting in traffic and avoid paying the charge.
To avoid paying ULEZ charges some of the time, you may also consider moving into the ULEZ zone, or to the outskirts of London. That way you’ll be able to use your car for some trips and take public transport for others.
ULEZ cameras are situated at the boundary of the ULEZ zone and throughout. There are currently 1,775 ULEZ cameras in operation, and the TfL plans to continue installing more until it reaches its target of 2,750.
The cameras use number plate and registration data to identify vehicles that do not meet the ULEZ emissions standards, and those drivers will be required to pay the £12.50 daily charge.
